The year 1985 was the prototypical 80s year for me. An abundance of songs that I liked, but very few songs that I loved. In fact, that three songs given an ‘Awesome’ rating here I think I was being generous with the definition given the songs in prior years that hold that rating.

In 1984 I was 10 years old. I first started getting into music at the age of eight, but it was this year when I was really into music. I was gathering quite the collection of cassettes, I was listening to the radio with the tape recorder pressed against it, ready to hit ‘record’. American Top 40 was a weekly listen.

These take time, because those few songs I don’t recognize by title I will listen to on YouTube and usually get reminded of one I know well. I whittle down 400+ songs that were released that year to a list of songs I actually enjoy. This was the year that the worst song in history was released. More on that at the end (where it belongs).
I was looking at some “Top 100 characters of all time” lists with my daughter the other day and all too often I would see some terrible choices that made the list. So I decided to create my own, for the common man. I’m 41 and I enjoy action, adventure, sci-fi and comedy. There have been some great characters over the years, but I don’t have a lot of respect for the older characters. Yes, movies created in the 50s, 60s and 70s deserve acknowledging. But if I can’t even sit through one of those movies all the way through, then how can I put their lead character on my list? If they’re so great, remake them under today’s technology, effects, and acting ability.

In 1981 I was seven years old. Solo debuts from Phil Collins and Billy Idol are released, three young teens in New York get together for the first time and later decide to call themselves the Beastie Boys… and a little venture called MTV made its debut.
In 1980 I was six years old and living in the small town of Stratford, Ontario. All I could remember about that place when it comes to music, where I lived between the ages of five and seven, was hearing the radio in the morning in the kitchen. My appreciation for 1980s music, like all the years before it, came later. It was two or three years later where I started appreciating the music as it came out.
I gathered up all the songs I rated “Awesome” throughout each year of the 70s. There were just over 100 of them. And while the individual years weren’t ranked in numerical order, this decade summary is.

This was a deep year, but a weak one. I’m actually not a huge Floyd fan, but in 1979 they were the cream of the crop with three of the five best songs (at least, according to my tastes). This was the year that Sony released the first Walkman. Remember those?
Much like 1977, generally speaking 1978 was not a great year for music. Unlike 1977, the ’78 edition of new releases didn’t have a Bat Out of Hell or Rumours to save it.
